Transport UK Social Values Charter - Pillar 4: Driving Environmental Progress
Driving environmental progress is crucial for a sustainable future and Transport UK is leading the way. Our operating companies have already made substantial progress in reducing emissions and pioneering sustainable transport, and we continue to explore innovative solutions for the transition to a net zero future.
Case Studies
Transport UK London Bus is a pioneer in EV public transport. It has electrified all six of its depots and operates 250 zero-emission, fully electric buses (roughly a third of its total fleet). It won the 2023 Fleet Electrifications Strategy of the Year award at the Electric Vehicle Innovation and Excellence Awards (EVIEs).
Our train operating companies are also working towards electrification. WMT recently introduced a new fleet of electric trains in February this year in a move that will contribute to efforts to achieve a net zero railway system in the UK. Over the next decade, WMT plans to reduce diesel emissions by over 90%.
GA is currently working with industry partners on a feasibility study to explore how hydrogen-powered trains could fit into the UK’s vision for a low-carbon transport system.
Merseyrail has launched a sustainable battery-powered fleet and reduced its carbon emissions by 60% over the last year.
EMR is developing a bi-mode fleet of Aurora trains that can run on both diesel and electric, to be introduced in 2025. This will reduce CO2 emissions by 44%. EMR aims to decarbonise its diesel fleet by 2040 as part of its net zero roadmap.
